Bound up in 1839, it was the first edition of Dickens printed in Australia, and complete copies are now among the great rarities of Australian printing. Clifford Craig (1896 to 1986), the Launceston surgeon and historian of colonial Tasmanian engraving and furniture, gives a full account of the parts, wrappers, illustrations and variant plates. He also gives a collation of the bound volume, a checklist of other books and pamphlets bearing Dowling's imprint, and notes on Dowling's newspapers and library. It remains the standard reference for collectors of the Van Diemen's Land Pickwick and of early Tasmanian printing.

Cloth bright and clean, binding square and firm, top edge lightly toned.
