An illustrated mid-twentieth-century edition of Aesop’s Fables, edited and illustrated with wood engravings by Boris Artzybasheff. Published by Charles Skilton Ltd, London, in 1948. A complete copy, retaining the original illustrated dust jacket.
The book features striking black-and-white wood engravings throughout, characteristic of Artzybasheff’s bold and often surreal graphic style. The book and dust jacket are in fair condition. The dust jacket shows general wear, toning, and edge losses consistent with age, while the binding remains sound and the pages are clean and complete. The board have experienced warping with age.
Artzybasheff was one of the most distinctive illustrators of the mid-twentieth century, known for his expressive, sometimes unsettling visual interpretations of classic texts. This 1948 edition of Aesop’s Fables is collected primarily for its illustration rather than textual priority and remains a representative example of post-war British illustrated book production.
