An early wartime edition of E. H. Carr’s study of the political and economic conditions required for a durable post-war settlement.

Written during the Second World War, Conditions of Peace develops themes from Carr’s earlier The Twenty Years’ Crisis and turns from criticism of the interwar order to the problem of reconstruction after the war. Divided into sections on fundamental political and economic issues and the outlines of future policy, Carr considers democracy, national self-determination, economic organisation, Britain’s position in Europe, and the institutional framework of a post-war settlement. The work is an important contemporary example of British thinking about the political and economic order that might follow the conflict.

Cloth with some rubbing and dark surface marking, particularly towards the lower boards. Dust jacket toned and worn, with creasing, edge tears and chipping, most notably with loss at the head of the spine; the front panel, spine lettering and publisher’s flap text remain substantially intact. Internally generally clean with light age-toning.

A sound copy of the first reprint, retaining the scarce original dust jacket despite notable wear.
