An early twentieth-century illustrated edition of Cossack Fairy Tales and Folk-Tales, selected, edited, and translated by Robert Nisbet Bain. Illustrated by E. W. Mitchell. Published by A. H. Bullen, London, in 1902. A New Edition, presented here in the publisher’s original cloth binding.
The binding remains sound and structurally firm, with the decorative cover design and lettering still clear. The cloth shows general age-related toning and light surface wear, consistent with handling. Mild rubbing is visible at the extremities. The rear board displays similar toning, with no significant distortion. Internally, the book is complete, with clean pages and light, even age toning. A contemporary gift inscription dated Christmas 1907 is present on the front endpaper, adding period character. Overall, a well-preserved copy for its age.
Robert Nisbet Bain was a noted folklorist and translator, instrumental in introducing Eastern European and Russian tales to English-speaking audiences. Early Bullen editions are collected for their attractive design and contribution to Edwardian-era interest in folklore and myth.
