Boards clean and sound, corners lightly worn. Hinges and joints strong and square throughout. Spine bright, gilt lettering and tooling crisp and legible. Foxing confined to the page edges only, with no bleed into the printed text. Illustrations clean throughout, with no foxing, all forty present and complete. Front free endpaper carries an ink ownership inscription, "Charles Courtney, John Charles Hodgson Courtney, 1957," with a pencilled dating note "(circa 1900)" above.
