Large folio format

A complete bound folio edition of Japanese Art Folio, produced in Tokyo around the turn of the twentieth century using the collotype photographic process. This volume contains 72 full-page plates in total, comprising 12 colour plates and 60 black-and-white collotype plates, each protected by captioned tissue guards.

The folio was produced as a luxury publication intended to present Japanese art and culture to an international audience at a moment when Japan was actively engaging with the wider world.

Provenance

This copy bears a presentation inscription dated June 1903, from Kamimura Hikonojo to Sir John See, who was at that time the Premier of New South Wales, Australia. (and supported by an inset newspaper article) The inscription reflects an early moment in Japan-Australia diplomatic and cultural relations and adds significant historical interest beyond the artistic content alone.

Condition

  • Complete with all plates present

  • All colour plates clean and unfaded, with no foxing observed

  • Various degrees of foxing to tissue guards, consistent with age

  • Binding sound and intact

  • No loose plates or missing leaves

  • Very good condition silk covered boards

Overall a very presentable complete folio, with strong visual appeal and documented historical association.
