A first edition, first printing of The Unconsoled by Kazuo Ishiguro, published by Faber and Faber, London, in 1995. A near fine copy, with clean, unmarked pages and a firm binding. Housed in a very good original dust jacket, showing only light handling wear.
The Unconsoled is Ishiguro’s fourth novel and his most formally ambitious work, unfolding as a dreamlike narrative in which time, memory, and identity dissolve into a single, disorienting continuum. Following a celebrated pianist through an unnamed European city, the novel explores anxiety, obligation, and artistic expectation in a style that departs sharply from Ishiguro’s earlier realism.
This first UK edition represents an important transitional point in Ishiguro’s career, marking his decisive turn toward experimental narrative forms and standing as one of the most challenging and discussed works in his bibliography, preceding When We Were Orphans and Never Let Me Go.
