A first edition, first printing of Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salman Rushdie, published by Granta Books in association with Viking Penguin, London, in 1990. A very good copy, with a previous owner’s inscription to the blue front free endpaper. The text block is generally clean and legible, with light foxing to the bottom edge and fore-edge, and light foxing affecting the title page and the leaf preceding it; the remainder of the internal pages are clear. The binding remains firm and square.
In a very good dust wrapper, retaining strong colour, but with a small tear to the top left corner of the front panel and light general handling wear. No loss to the jacket artwork, and now housed in a protective sleeve.
Haroun and the Sea of Stories is Rushdie’s first children’s novel, written during the period of his enforced seclusion following The Satanic Verses. A richly imaginative allegory celebrating storytelling, freedom of expression, and the power of language, it occupies a distinctive place in Rushdie’s bibliography. This U.K. first edition represents the true first appearance of the work and remains an important early issue for collectors of modern literary first editions, particularly within a core Rushdie collection.
