A first edition, first printing of Shame by Salman Rushdie, published by Jonathan Cape, London in 1983. A very good copy, signed by the author on the title page, free from internal inscriptions or markings, with light, even toning to the text block. In a near fine unclipped dust wrapper, and is clean and presentable.
Shame is Rushdie’s third novel and one of his most important early works, a politically charged and allegorical examination of power, identity, and moral corruption in a fictionalised Pakistan. Written in the period between Midnight’s Children and The Satanic Verses, it represents a key stage in Rushdie’s development as a major international literary voice.
