Small octavo (12mo). Contemporary full calf, five raised bands to spine, red morocco title label (partially legible); engraved frontispiece portrait of Charles XII after de Vausse, engraved illustrated title page, and folding engraved map ("A Map for the History of Charles XII") showing Northern and Eastern Europe from Scandinavia to the Black Sea.
One of the early London editions of Voltaire's celebrated biography of the warrior-king Charles XII of Sweden, a work praised as a masterpiece of historical narrative and one of Voltaire's most popular books in his own lifetime. First published in French in 1731, it went through numerous rapid English editions throughout the 1730s. Published by the same C. Davis/A. Lyon imprint as the fourth edition of the previous year.
With the ownership signatures of B. Bartlett and G.A. Bartlett (Ex Libris notation to title page); pencil note to front free endpaper recording "folding map 1733." Binding worn spine leather, boards rubbed and darkened; hinges cracked but holding; interior pages toned and spotted, heavier to preliminaries; folding map present.
