Haberfield, NSW: Longueville Media for Geoffrey Cains, 2021. First edition.
The first edition of the only full bibliography of Australian books that were withdrawn, pulped, recalled or otherwise suppressed after publication.
186 numbered entries, with illustrations of covers and title pages in the text and notes and sources for each entry. ISBN 9780648973669.
Cains documents books that were published in Australia and then removed from sale, from colonial pamphlets to modern bestsellers. Each entry records the book, the circumstances of its withdrawal and the evidence for it: defamation actions, government pressure, literary hoaxes, plagiarism claims and publishers' second thoughts. Examples include David Day's Paul Keating: The Biography, pulped and reprinted in 2015, and Helen Demidenko's The Hand That Signed the Paper, withdrawn and reissued under the author's real name, Darville, after the 1995 hoax was exposed. It is an essential reference for collectors of Australiana, and for anyone interested in the history of censorship and suppression in Australian publishing.
As new, the binding square and firm, the text clean and unmarked. Dust jacket bright and unworn, in a removable protective cover.
