A Journal of the Plague Year by Daniel Defoe. This is the 1835 Thomas Tegg and Son edition, revised and illustrated with historical notes by Edward Wedlake Brayley. The volume includes a half-title, a facsimile reprint of the title page of the original 1722 edition, and xviii + 376 pages of text. It is illustrated with four engraved plates by George Cruikshank, the caricaturist and illustrator whose plates here include "The Dead Cart," "The Great Fire in Aldgate," "Near Limehouse Wall," and "London Cabin." The Cruikshank plates are all present and complete.

The volume is bound in the original publisher's cloth over boards with the spine in a half-leather binding, gilt lettered. The front pastedown carries the ink ownership inscription "George Hancock, Hertford" in a neat Victorian hand, an early provenance record consistent with the period of publication.

The binding shows wear to the spine ends, corners. The boards are sound. The pages show tanning consistent with age. The Cruikshank plates are present. A solid copy with genuine character.
