An illustrated late nineteenth-century edition of The Poetical Works of Mrs. Hemans by Felicia Hemans, published by Frederick Warne & Co., London and New York, in 1897. A good to very good copy, with a firm binding and complete contents. Bound in the original brown cloth boards, gilt-decorated to the front board and spine, with light rubbing and wear consistent with age. Internally clean, with scattered foxing, and retaining the original portrait frontispiece.
The volume bears a contemporary manuscript prize inscription, recording its presentation as a school award, adding a layer of social history. Felicia Hemans was among the most widely read poets of the Romantic and early Victorian periods, celebrated for her lyrical verse and themes of home, patriotism, and moral reflection. Issued as part of Warne’s “Lansdowne” Poets series, this edition reflects the late-Victorian revival and canonisation of Hemans’ work and remains attractive today as both a literary artefact and a decorative shelf piece.
